Home Cable Asylum

Interconnects, speaker wire, power cords. Ask the Cable Guys.

Sounds like a component upgrade...

I once raised some heat in the forum when I gushed over how the AirSine performed with a mid-priced Aragon 18k MkII preamp.

The preamp's design and parts are excellent, including a Penny & Giles volume pot and outboard power supply, but it's a sleeper; likely due to folks selecting tube preamps for use with the much admired Aragon 4004 MkII power amp (which put Aragon on the map).

The 18k MkII's power supply is very sensitive to vibration control, while it's response to an AirSine power cord is profound, IMHO. It's all about a power cord being an extension of a component's power supply in terms of a power cord's benefit, and if folks understood that it's not about the miles of wire connected to the power station, this would help in the acceptance of high performance power cords as being a truly valid factor.

For an $1,800 preamp to deserve a power cord priced at nearly half it's price might seem silly to some, but since I bought my mint condition Aragon 18k MkII preamp via Audiogon for $500, the price-to-performance ratio expense of the AirSine was a silly-good thing in how it makes the preamp sing like a much bigger boy. I even had budget to upgrade it's IEC inlet and build a custom DC power umbilical for it. These mod's helped, but the AirSine did wonders, IME.

Does the 18k MkII sound more like a $3,000 preamp with the AirSine feeding it? Maybe not, but I'm quite satisfied, for sure. my 2 cents
