DIY XLR interconnect update/help PLEASE

Whew!
Been looking at DIY interconnect options in these forums and at Jon Risch's site (thanks Jon). Never done one, so somewhat hard to understand the routine. Want to make 16' set XLR interconnects between Audio Research LS15 tube linestage and Audio Research VT100MkII tube amp- don't want to order Belden 89259 roll at this point ($259/100'). Want to make quick set from local supplies: I'm in soCal with Fry's, Radio Shack, Orvac, Marvac nearby. Am ordering Neutriks from Parts Express tommorow. According to Jon's site one option is Radio Shack 910-1573 (Belden 82248) which I strip down and twist. At this point, I surround this assembly with a spacer/insulator- what do I use; heatshrink or tape? I then surround this assembly with braided shield (RS 910-1579, 0.285'ID)- what goes on over the shield? Is RS 910-1579 an assembly that I have to cut apart to retrieve shield or do I use it as it comes? Connections: 1 to first twisted conductor, 2 to other twisted conductor, and 3 to shield only at source (not also to signal ground?). Most of the posts about this routine were circa 2000- 2001. Are there new info, cables, and techinques that you guys are using now? Is nobody DIYing IC's anymore? Much thanks, Kip.
