Follow Ups:
...Which of those you listed work?? All?? a few?? what's
the OLDEST piece of the ones you listed, and
if working, what do you like about it???
The oldest amp I have is a Victor 245 that uses a pair of 45's from the late 20's or early 30's. Unfortunately, I have not been able to find another one, so I have not gone through it. Of the amps listed, all but a few (Fisher 55's, Leak ST60, Eico HF35's and the single Mac 20W2) work. I haven't got around to them yet, as well as quite a few other pieces not listed. The oldest amps on this list that are in working condition are the Mac 50W2's, which are from 1951 - based on the date in the owners manual. It is surpisingly dynamic and quite detailed sounding, although a bit soft on the high end - which I actually prefer. The bass is quite extended although not as well controlled as some of the newer vintage amps I own. An overall good performer - better in many respects than the latter chrome Mac pieces. Of course, that's a subjective opinion.
Tough to pick a favorite, but I would probably say the best SOUNDING are the Lafayette 550, and the Scott 240 and 280 mono blocks. At least that's what I'm thinking right now. The Scotts are real sleepers in the vintage ranks, but are rather hard to find. I am still looking for a pair of 232's, which must have been made in VERY small numbers.
> > > See my posting above for my list> > of those,I like my Allied 333
the best--it's versatile--I can use it as a stand-alone am/fm receiver, and the 6BM8 output tubes make it sound quite nice, and I can ALSO use it as a tube PREAMP because it has
a speakers on/off switch--which allows me to patch any
number of cd player, or borrowed MD deck or LP table into it then run the signal thru the Allied's tube preamp stage out to
a more powerful amp,and into the
Magnepan SMg's(my favorite speakers)...BTW, the Allied has
a "magic-eye" tube, which really helps tune
the stations, and looks WAY COOL!!
