Yes, I know they exist, but being a DIY guy, I'm asking for DIY recipes... Anyway, after building OTL's from scratch, going back to commercial parts isn't exactly pleasing.
The other concern is, Zero was built with full-power OTL amp in mind, while my objective is to reduce tube count, which may require a greater step-down ratio.
FYI, Paul Speltz himself has used the Zeros in the same way that you intend, in order to reduce tube count and heat output. Also, if you contact Paul, he MAY answer your technical questions on the construction of the Zeros, in order to facilitate your DIY urges. He is a very nice guy.
The ZEROs have the ability to be used in configurations ranging from 1:1.3 to at least 1:5.8. The standard ratios are 1:2, 1:3 and 1:4.They would be useful for a 6AS7 amp with as little as 4 devices per chassis, and proably less. In the winter, I have my ZEROs configured to make my 8ohm speakers appear as a 12ohm load (1:1.5 or so) and in the summer, I cut the tube compliment in half and re-configure the ZEROs to 1:3.
This works perfectly, though I do miss half of the power in those months.. But the speakers are reasonably efficient, so I can still get good levels with the 35 or so remaining watts. Keep in mind that an M-60 on an *ideal* load, is capable of more like 70+ watts.
