That right was established by SCOTUS in its Heller decision.
But Justice Scalia wrote the majority opinion and made it clear that the right to own a gun isn't absolute. States, municipalities, and the feds can place certain restrictions on gun ownership.
Assault weapons bans are constitutional. So are rigorous background checks like NYC uses, where detectives talk to you family, friends, and co-workers before issuing a gun permit.
But then there's Texas. Got a problem with gun-owning nuts going on shooting sprees? Make it easier for nuts to own guns.
Honestly, I agree with you. There are already too many guns in circulation and common sense (and constitutional) gun control measures are just closing the barn door long after the horses are gone. But surely there's a way to reduce our gun population so that the proverbial future generations don't have to worry about some asshole with a grudge showing up at the grocery store.
