Inmate Central, where civil and family-friendly discourse about off-audio topics (other than religion and politics) is welcome.

None of your three did anything particularly great.

Neither did Humphrey for that matter but so few do.
McGovern flew WWII combat missions as the pilot of a B-24. He voted for the Tonkin Gulf resolution; so did McCarthy. Mondale wasn't appointed to the Senate until after the vote.
McCarthy didn't do any more than Pat Buchanan did in 1992, namely expose the underlying weakness of a sitting president.
Mondale was drafted to run for Senate after Paul Wellstone got killed, but Mondale hated to campaign, essentially didn't, and the seat ended up going to Norm Coleman.
None of the three were what I would call "liberal." Mondale and McCarthy were too centrist for my tastes, and McGovern was essentially a mid-Western conservative, something I didn't realize at age 17.
BTW, I stumbled into a Humphrey campaign event during the 1976 election. Went with the family to Monroeville Mall and there was Hubert, shaking hands after delivering a speech.
Comedian David Frye has an hilarious send up of Humphrey on his album Richard Nixon: A Fantasy.
Had Humphrey beat Nixon in '68--and if the campaign had lasted another week he probably would have--I seriously doubt we'd have still been in Vietnam on Election Day in 1972. We almost certainly wouldn't have bombed Cambodia (which killed about half million people who's only offense is that they were in the way). The country would have been spared Watergate.

The blissful counterstroke-a considerable new message.
