Practically suicidal

1971

The infamous year that the Ford Pinto and Chevy Vega were introduced. The Vega was named Car of the Year by Motor Trend and Car and Driver.

When I was a kid, my older brother had a Pinto and my mom had a Vega. Even back then, I didn't like riding in them, they were so shitty. She was t-boned at a 4-way stop by an uninsured drunk driver in that Vega. It was so destroyed she had to be cut out of it and she was in a coma for the next two weeks.

Supposedly, the best selling car that year was the Chrysler New Yorker, a big old boat with the longest hood and trunk I think I've ever seen. A relative had one. I think it got about 8 MPG. But I would have guessed the Beetle. My early childhood memories include seeing lots of rusting Beetles that their owners couldn't keep running right.

Even muscle cars were bad that year. Third generation Vette's were ugly cars with their bulbous swoopy lines and terrible fit & finish. Pontiac had beaten the GTO with an ugly stick the previous year. Ford did the same to the Mustang in 1971. The Plymouth 'Cuda was a little better looking, but the styling was still 70s-ified.
