HE was an English nobleman of comfortable means. He saw what was happening in Russia in the early 20th century, and he feared that he might lose his privilege if revolution found its way to England. It was for this reason that he advocated for a distribution of wealth, not because he felt some burning moral reason to do so. Acting in his own rational self-interest was much more inline with Adam Smith's philosophy that if people acted for themselves, that their wealth would ultimately be redistributed without government intervention. Having said that, there was no Jeff Bezos back then.
