Period. And they got screwed out of the national championship because the sports writers decided it was time to give Tom Osbourne his lifetime achievement award.
At one point, they were ranked No. 1 in all the polls, had beaten Michigan at Michigan, blew out OSU 63-14, and were beating the snot out of Indiana when Paterno pulled his starters with 10 minutes left in the game. The Hoosiers scored two garbage time touchdowns, and Penn State dropped to No. 2. I've never been able to take FBS football seriously since.
I remember Nebraska scoring the game- and championship-winning touchdown against Miami that year by running right over Ray Lewis, too.
The Bengals are like the Pittsburgh Pirates of the NFL. Satisfied with mediocrity as long as it's profitable. The other NFL owners want to win the Super Bowl. They might not have the competence to run a sports franchise but they still want to win.
The Bengals are more like the Pirates. If they do win, that's fine, but it isn't really necessary.
More and more baseball teams are following the Pirates' model, too. The Cubs are getting ready to dump some of their best players.
The blissful counterstroke-a considerable new message.
