Missed his entire rookie season.
Carter played for Joe Paterno, and IMO Paterno had a tendency to wear his running backs out before they turned pro. Guys like Franco Harris and Curt Warner (the running back who played for Seattle, not the QB) were the exception rather than the rule.
There's a good longform article on football players that suffer torn knee ligaments. According to many doctors, the surgical techniques have advanced to the point that the repaired knee is usually better than it was before. The problem is the athlete's mental state after the injury. They're often afraid to test the repaired knee or they change the way they play in order to protect that knee.
