commercial rut. He was at his best with Jeff Lorber Fusions band of the late 70's. Kenny was one serious player with that band but that because Jeff's band was so funky they pushed Kenny to his best and he couldn't play that cheesy style he did when he went on his own.I had a friend over some years ago and he wanted to hear some Funky music other than the usual suspects (TOP, Coldblood, Graham and others). I told him if he hand heard JLF, he said he heard of Jeff Lorber but not when he had the band JLF. I started with all Jeff's early tunes, he really was impressed and liked the band. Then I put on "Wizard Island", he was blown away with how funky that band was. He even commented on the Sax player that who was he cause he was one of the better players he had heard (and he hates Kenny G).
I then told him it was Kenny G. and couldn't believe it. He said that sounds like a totally different player. I told Kenny is a fine player with the right group but when he went commercial is where he messed up. He made money, but has for ever been stuck in that 90's style ever since, that's why everyone hates his style now.
In the late 90's Kenny G. would do private concerts for Callaway Gulf employee's for Employee appreciation week. I had a chance to go with a coworker at PB just down the street from Callaway. She worked at Callaway at night, I passed on it cause he would be playing that Bubble Gum music. Now if would have been with Jeff Lorber Fusion, I would have been there in a heartbeat.
