Without a definition of "fairly high end", it's hard to know what to say. So, I'll make an assumption. Salad, shrimp appetizer, 8 oz beef tenderloin, sauteed veggies, wine, dessert, semi-comfortable chair: $75 to $100 per person. Am I in the ballpark?
If so, the only times I have that sort of thing in a restaurant is when somebody's company is paying. :) Otherwise, I make it at home for about $25 per person.
So, it depends on who his clientele is. Here in north Dallas, there are a lot of people who think nothing of going to an expensive restaurant two or three times a month, and there's always the business dinners going on, too, not to forget the company parties and individuals' special occasions. If that's your friend's clientele, he'll probably be fine, as long as he keeps his costs under control and doesn't screw it up.
The restaurants I'd be more concerned about surviving are the TGIFriday, Olive Garden, BJ's, Macaroni Grill, etc. which are oriented to a lower price point and need a pretty full house most days of the week. They seriously need to adapt asap.
