It was his suggestion for the pergola/awning to block 'some' of the harsh Sun's rays that beats up on it day in, day out.
Once the paint dries I'm going to add a canvas to block it out even more-

not sure, most likely for additional support. I made it clear andtold him from the start I wanted rigid, sturdy frame work and boy he came through.
