Actually this is not a "modded"299b.A rebuild using modern parts(under chassis caps)new coupling caps,rebuilt power supply etc.After I posted,I found my problem.I installed 4 resistors of the waaay wrong value.Things are back to normal now.
BTW,this is a 7189 PP integrated.The 7189 is a 6bq5 with higher plate and grid voltage.Sounds virtually the same.Scott and Fisher sound different but this tube type is known for a sweet but punchy signature.Probably the sonics you remember fondly.I prefer a 6bq5/el84/7189 based amp to el34 and 7591 types for this reason.
