the Pioneer is certainly much more technically sophisticated


than the AKAI. The latter is very much an entry level, mechanical linkage, single-motor tape deck. Of course, the technical complexity of the Pioneer might be seen as a liability, but they had a good reputation when new and still do at this late date.
I would expect the Pioneer to be audibly better, too -- but I've never compared them head-to-head. Personally, I'd try to find an RT-701 (the non-auto reverse variant), but they're not common.
