I'd be looking at vintage KEF, say like a 103.2 which has been selling on eBay from 150 to 250 lately. But can go higher. Smooth, yet detailed. If you can find a pair locally you may be able to get them for much less. The problem is, if you are looking for a specific speaker, you're going to have to pay the going rate.
Mark's suggestion of the ADS L-710 is a good one, you might also keep your eyes open for an ADS 2 way with an 8" woofer like the L-520, L-570 or the L-1.
