RE: CD player bargains?

I just found a Marantz CD5000 in a thrift store for $9. It is definitely not TOL, but it does look nice on the shelf. When you look close, its budget origins become obvious. The case is tinny, it its light and the connectors are uninspiring. When I did an internet search on my phone, the top of the list directed me to the Lambizator's site, and I was shocked to read what he sad. He heaps praise on it, summing it up by saying, "All in all, Marantz CD5000 is one of the best CD players ever made by Philips if not even the best." I tested it. It was working fine. Priced at $9.00, I figured I had little to lose so I took it home. When I did a deeper search, I had another surprise. The Lampizator seem to be the only one that has such a high opinion of the CD5000. Most think it is decent, but I did not see anyone else the thought it was this great.

I plugged in my trusty Sennheiser HD-555 headphones and it did sound very good to me, but I suspect a mediocre headphone amp is holding it back. I plan to put in in my main system and see what it can do. Giant killer or not, this is a great sounding CD player for $9.00.

Sorry for the long story, but armed with a smartphone, you can still find great deals in CD players at the thrift stores. There are also lots of DVD players. I also see the occasional receiver. Tuners, cassette decks and subwoofers are still relatively common. You won't see them everyday, but you are likely to find lots of good music. I have done very well with clothing too. A few of the stores I go to get new clothing. I can always find a pair of Levis when I need them. I just bought a new bomber jacket for $15. You can look things up on your phone on site, so it's much harder to make a mistake.
