I'm sorry I can't be of any help to your "what happened?" question. Radio frequency (RF) circuitry is complex, and hopefully someone will be able to steer you towards an expert who can help track down the malfunctioning part or parts.
I wouldn't have bothered to reply at all, except to help you find the answer to something you weren't really asking, "don't know where the transmitting antenna is".
Below is a link to the FM Fool, which will help you locate the transmitter, which can be helpful information to have regarding your antenna placement, no matter what tuner you're using.
