I'm with you - it can be tough to communicate in text... and I'm not great at it. I try to say too much - most not relevant - only to confuse people, including myself! Probably because I type as I think... and I am NOT a lineal thinker - stuff all over the mental place!I'll let you know how I go vinnie - I'm starting to move ahead with the project after a year hiatus... not cheap though, but hey, I don't have too many other vices or hobbies. I've just done a second cut of the layout and sub-chassis design - I'll be emailing to plastics supplier tomorrow, I hope. Then I can organise the chassis. Then build. :)
As a taster, the main differences with the new amp are:
Input stage (6C6)Screen: derived using a voltage divider
Cathode C: uF has been calculated; Auricap XO
Output stage (2A3)Operating point: 40mA/250V (1:6 mA:V ratio - nice for most 4 mu tubes), 4K3 load
Cathode C: uF has been calculated; Clarity MR (or Audyn Ref if I can pull the trigger)
Transformer: a quality wound, custom nano-crystalline double-c coreMay change to a PX4 or AD1 output tube. Time will tell.
Power supply
Design: CLC calculated for low impedance, fast well-damped recovery, low (but not ultra-low) ripple
B+ transformer: quality wound custom Super Hi-B core
Filament transformer: custom Z11 core (input and output)
Choke: quality wound, custom nano-crystalline double-c core (7H, 10 Ohm DCR)
Capacitors: Clarity TC (I may change this or minimise their affect by using a nice partial ultrapath cap)Other
Direct coupled
Mono block build
Multiple star grounding
Custom stainless steel chassis
Sturdy, POM/Acetal/Delrin sub-chassisShould sound pretty decent, but I don't really know if it will be an improvement over what I run now. We'll see.
Cheers,
