The original TASCAM 122 is pictured here. The part encircled in red is a front-panel, user adjustable section for bias and eq with a preset that allows you to tweak the bias and eq to match the tape you're using. When you want to use that particular bias & eq setting, you press the "preset" button on the right to recall that setting.

On the TEAC C-series machines, there's an optional plug-in card slot on the front of the deck. If you can find the card (a big if, they're scarce.) it'll give you the same feature as the 122.
