What do the mail gifs to left mean?

Maybe I am just dense but I cannot find a link to what all the little mail gifs to the left of the threads in ethread view mean? Some are white and closed, some are red and opened, some are gray and closed, some are gray and closed with little hashtag marks on top?

I tried to search all over for an answer and couldn't find one.
