Some DIY builds I have seen are truly dreadful. Some DIY-come-commercial builds that folks rave about look truly dreadful. Some DIY builds put the vast majority of commercial builds to shame. It depends.
I think that removal of commercial constraints can - given the right set of conditions - result in amplifier that can better meet needs than commercially-available amplifiers.
