Problem with Melbourne DRD 300B and related questions

Hi - looking for help/advice on my Welborne 300B. Recently I heard a pop on start up, but it ran fine. Thought it might be tube going bad (tubes were getting old) so switched power tubes, but the pop happened again and filament on the tube started getting very hot and burning up.
Any ideas about what might have happened?
Now related questions. I have had to fix these 2 or 3 times in the past 5 years with various parts wearing out, including tube sockets. They are 20 plus years old, I believe.
Looking for suggestions on whether I should have them thoroughly worked over and most parts replaced or just move on and buy a newer amp.
If a newer amp is suggested I'm looking for ideas of currently available amps that are recommended.
Thanks in advance.
