How does an electroluminescence display work?

I am trying to fix an EL display of a SONY XA-7ES CD player. I assume that it is a white EL display, but i don't really know, and if I did, I don't know HOW they operate, how much current, voltage, etc. It is a typical white display and does anyone know why it will all of sudden dim, for instance, and then when I tap it, go back to full brightness?

Anyway, It is hard to get to the electronics the way it is built, so I am just trying to understand it to see if I can do anything about it. Thanks if anyone can tell me more about it??

BTW, I found this link http://www.edisontechcenter.org/LED.html but while interesting, is far too general.
