I think there's a fair amount of evidence, both from tests and real life experience, that there are a few "golden ears" among us. For the most part, I suspect this has less to do with the ear's sensitivity than with analytical ability or skill. To use an analogy from a different field, I have a friend who can reproduce any meal. He can go to an Indian restaurant and eat an obscure dish and come home and cook the same thing. Whereas I would be hard pressed to identify the ingredients in a meal of steak, baked potatoes, and broccoli.
