Re: Recommendations for CD burner and software

You don't need anything special to make backup copies of your audio cds. the best software is free. EAC (exact audio copy) will extract the audio from your cds and a program such as furio will burn them to cdr. if you buy a cd burner, though, it will include burning software. all burning software is essentially the same. you will not notice any quality differences between different burning programs. the burning process has been pretty much perfected for many years.

your audio quality will be identical to the original, and some may even argue that it will be better. i have never heard anybody say that a burned copy of a cd is worse than the original.

pc noise is not an issue when dealing with digital audio. if you were transferring LPs to cdr then i would say that pc noise would be an issue, but for burning cdrs from cds you are not dealing with analog at all. dont worry about it. there's no reason :)

audio cdrs differ from standard "data" cdrs in two and only two ways:
1. they work in stand alone burners (those not pc driven)
2. they carry a tax that YOU pay which goes to the record comapanies because they figure that you will be copying their cds.

dont be a sucker and buy "audio" cdrs for use in a PC. it is completely unnecessary!

if you want one of the best cd burners, get a Plextor. they are unsurpassed and have one of the best reputations in the biz.

good luck.
i think that you will find that making perfect copies of your cds is much, much easier than you think!

oh yeah, if your laptop has usb 2 make sure that your burner is usb 2 compatible. usb 2 offers increased transfer speeds over usb 1.
