Yes Al, these were used like you said, and I bet your right on the amp, but I intend to run these individually, so a simply DC power supply is all I really need (well 2 of them for 5000R only,) to properly fire up the field coils.

Another tube guru suggested the below, but his full time job, doesn't give him any free time, bummer.

a simple CLC tube supply should work with the 5000 - basically a transformer , tube like 5AR4 , Cap, choke, cap
I'd regulate it to try different voltages , but you could use a simple resistor ladder to do the same thing.
