There's at least two things here: One is the size, the other is the compliance/resistance. I replaced the foam surrounds on my Dynaudio 8" drivers several year ago, with neoprene "rubber" surrounds. They do sound different, but it's ok - I just EQ it a little differently.
Get a hold of Meniscus Audio in Michigan. They might be able to help you.
