The HR6040 certainly looks the better of the two. I cross my 1823 (non "M" so it has a copper voice coil) and 1824M's at 500 Hz on the bottom and 2500 Hz on the top. Assuming that the tweeter you have in mind is horn loaded (and thus directional) its a good idea to get the tweeter in phase with the mid horn which would place it near the mid driver's plane, though the exact location would likely be a bit different depending on the crossover type used. As you observe this may require getting the tweeter up a bit high, so some "streamlining" would be in order to avoid the tweeter's output reflecting off the back of the mid horn and interfering with the integration of the drivers, and also the musical instrument localization/soundstage if this is for a stereo rig. Just a simple ramp would be better than nothing. That's my take on it.
