Koss ESP/6 find at Goodwill but...

Some questions...what is the Knurled Knob thing for? Well, would be a knurled knob but its gone and just the nut is there locked tight. Also, I have read yay and nay about it needing "regular" amp power. Tried in the headphone jack of my cd player and cranked up the output all the way and while I could hear both sides it was very low in volume.
Have to decide if these are worth keeping or not for $9.95...
