"Once or twice in our still-brief existence I've dedicated an issue of this magazine [Listener] to someone who left us, and whose passing has let us sadder, poorer, and more alone than before. I wanted to do that now, but it's harder than usual to find the right words.
So here's a dedication in the simplest sense--the sense in which we do the very best things we can only for those few people we really, deep down, care to impress. Our families, and friends are our greatest blessings, and to the extent that they shape our every act with their good examples, they are no less a blessing when they're gone from this world."
