The Audio Research VT-100 MKII would be a downgrade - I moved from that amp to a pair of 450s. The 450s are fundamentally the same amp as the 300s with a number of enhancements. They use new transformers and better passive components. That increased power to 450 watts, improved resolution and tightened the low end. I have yet to hear better bass from a tube amp.rw
