Home Amp/Preamp Asylum

Looking for a new Amp or Preamp? If you're after tubes, post over here.

One of their performance tweaks

is using V-Cap film capacitors for the power supply of a tube preamp. That's not exactly a new concept, but let's explore what that would require.

My Audio Research SP20 preamp uses a pair of 470uF / 450V caps in the main supply. Looking at Chris VH's website, the largest I find is a 47uF / 250V model. That would require twenty of these $200 caps. But wait, the SP20's rail voltage is 285V so you would need a series configuration to handle that which provides only a fourth of the value. So now we need eighty of them for a cool $16k plus a HUGE box to put them in along with suitable umbilicals.

I'm thinking I would just trade up to a REF6 and REF2 phono. :)
