I've experimented with larger baffles on my 3.7. I've used 1x6ft 1" thick oak boards, mounting one on either side using the holes for the trim strips ... i.e. with the board in line with the speakers, not perpendicular. I've also connected two boards with hinges and mounted them on the woofer side only. This also allowed me to experiment with angling one of them.

What I found consistently was that using the boards resulted in a boost in mid-bass ... like +5db between 100-150Hz. It varied, but that's the basic effect. This was useful to me because room modes were causing some cancellations in that range.

I doubt that 2.5" would do anything, based on my observations (and measurements) with the 1-2ft wide baffles.
