But your 1.7s (or any spkr for that matter) don't just stop producing sound below the their 'cut-off' point - that's merely the frequency where the sound level is 3dB lower than it was, say, at 3x the cutoff frequency. At frequencies below the cut-off point ... the output simply gets less.

So if you were turning up your 1.7s, in order to be able to hear 40hz well then all that will happen - if you bring in your subs at a frequency which is the same as the 1.7's 'cut off' frequency (or less) then all that happens is that the subs will deliver those LFs.

Your neighbours will still hear them - depending on:
* how loud you listen at, and
* the construction of your apartment.
