But your 1.7s (or any spkr for that matter) don't just stop producing sound below the their 'cut-off' point - that's merely the frequency where the sound level is 3dB lower than it was, say, at 3x the cutoff frequency. At frequencies below the cut-off point ... the output simply gets less.

So if you were turning up your 1.7s, in order to be able to hear 40hz well then all that will happen - if you bring in your subs at a frequency which is the same as the 1.7's 'cut off' frequency (or less) - is that the subs will deliver those LFs, instead of the 1.7s.

Your neighbours will still hear them - depending on:
* how loud you listen at, and
* the construction of your apartment.
