What VTA for VPI HW19-JR ?

I bought a VPI HW19-Jr. w/PT-6 and Grado Gold cart. a few months ago and have been very happy with it overall. The bass response is very good, but on some records, gets boomy and undefined. The dealer set the VTA rather high, and I am wondering what VTA settings are used by others with this TT ? Since my dealer sells a lot of TT's and is a vinyl fanatic himself, I am reluctant to alter his setup without some indication that I will actually improve the sound. I haven't measured the arm height above the platter or plinth, but the arm as currently set is several degrees above parallel, and when cued, the cartridge is about 1 1/2" to 2" above the record.

BTW, I am a long-time lurker on Audioreview and must say that this site is really a welcome change from AR. No flames, and no repetitive questions like "do cables really make a difference ?"

You have no dynamics without cables.

Can't comment on VTA for your particular setup, but suggest you buy a set of feeler gauges from a hardware store and use these to achieve reproducible settings of arm height. It really can make or break a setup. If you want to fool around with VTA without changing the arm, make some platter mats of different thickness and change your record heights instead.
