Advice on Sota Star Sappire Series I Turntable setup.

I recently bought a Sota Star with the vacuum setup. It came with a Sumiko MMT tonearm. Initially when I set it up I was getting a very noticeable buzz from the right channel. I am using a carver cm-2002 integrated amplifier and a low fi Shure M111E cartridge with Klipsch Heresey speakers. After unplugging every in the socket and only having the integrated amp plugged in by itself and plugged the external power supply for the turntable into another solitary socket the hum has been drastically reduced, but I would feel better if I could eliminate it.

Could it be that my cartridge is the source? It is fairly cheap and old.

I was also wondering if anyone who has a Star could offer opinions on new cartridges in the less than $250 range preferably with a warmer bass centered response.

I am new to the realm of hifi and would appreciate any comments that may help me squash this buzz...........
please email if you can.
Thanks,
Floyd.

I think they call the power supply that is used on the Star an Electronic
Flywheel, which is nothing but a surge protector. Then again, are you
talking about the other unit which is for the vacuum pump. In either case,
try hooking up another ground wire from the ground post under the turntable
to the ground on the pre-amp. That post is on the underneath the table,
towards the rear, and off of center to your right if you are looking at
the table from the front.

many thanks for the suggestion..., posted on March 29, 1999 at 23:52:35

I own a Sota Sapphire, (not Star version) and the single best thing I did was have the motor upgraded. I have heard that Sota is making a come back, but I dont know how to contact them. Originally the table came with DC synchronus motor and mine was upgraded to AC synchronus. It made a huge difference in sound quality, though I couldnt tell you any of the technical stuff as to why. I also couldnt tell you if hum is related, only that the upgrade will take the table to a new level. I have the same arm as you, with the Sumiko Talisman DTi cartridge which was a good cartridge in its day. When I have to upgrade I'll probably try the Grado Reference series first, maybe Benz-Micro as well. Good luck!
