What to store LPs in??

I am looking for some opinions on what to store LPs in. Right now I have my lps in one record crate and a bunch of boxes, and I need a better (and a way that doesn't take up as much floor space) way to store them. I currently have about 700 or so now, but when summer comes it will grow rapidly (garage sales!!). I am basically looking for shelving units that don't cost a fortune, look decent, can support the weight and are of a decent size for 1000 LPs. What does everyone use? record crates? shelving units? What? Is anyone using any Ikea units for record storage? These were once suggested awhile back on analog addicts mailing list. If anyone is using any Ikea stuff what model and how much did it cost?

Big Matt

I am currently using some Oak bookcases that I bought at one of teh unfinished furniture stores for very little cash. I bought a quart of Danish oil and finished them mysele again saving a bundle. This was 15 years ago and they still work fine. Each bookcase is about 3 1/2 feet wide - and the shelves have a support lip to give the shelf extra strength so as not to sag under the weight of the LPs.

I bought 4 of the Ikea 12" x 12" pine crates (don't remember the model) and transferred my records from cardboard into them. They stack very nicely. I'd suggest using a good wood glue to hold them together instead of the stuff they come with. Make sure you use enough. They are only held together by wooden dowels and records weigh a lot. Completely sturdy when together and stacked though.

One other suggestion, don't pack them too tight. The bottom is not sqare in the corners - the corner piece sticks out causing the bottom of the records to be packed tighter than the middle and tops. This could cause a warping.

Make sure you get enough of them. They do make some larger sizes, one is about 12" x 2' and another is about 15" x 15" (which I found out after going back and purchasing a fifth one due to overflow.

Enjoy,
Bob

I recently had the same problem with a similar sized collection (1000 or so). I found a black metal shelving set at Service Merchandise. It is cross braced and has glass shelves. Fully loaded it is very inert, with no vibration, ringing, etc. The look matches my Solid Steel equipment stand perfectly. If you have a Service Merchandise check it out. Shelves are under $200 (on sale, could be a little more at regular price) and will probably hold at least 1500 albums. Email me if you need more info, and I will do what I can.
