CD Better for classical music?

Picked up two of my first classical recordings. They are Beethoven Violin Concerto with Chirstian Ferras, Herbert Von Harajan on the Deutche Grammaphon label and Dvork New World Symphony. I love the forth movement Allegron con fuoco. I know I may sound like a gringo talking about classical music forgive my lack of foundation. The first one is marked Dercyck Cooke 1958! on Angel Records. Whoa what sound! One thing I must complain about is the amount of ticks and pops. My beethoven record appears to be immaculate but still has some annoying surface noise, I know it is apparent in all LP's but this noise is not tolerabe. Do cd's more justice to classic music? It seems cd wins me over in one category of music. but if its rock n' I'm gonna keep on spinnin the old vinyl.

A lot of the LPs made in 70s used an inferior grade of vinyl that was very prone to surface noise.

I understand Daryl has offered to loan you his hearing aids. Also, don't buy classical LPs out of the 10 for a dollar bin. :-) Seriously, what makes CD appealing to some for large scale classical is the apparant improvement in noise and dynamic range. However, the sonic merits of CD end there. When you want some truth in timbre and a texturally rich presentation LP is still the better medium. It sound to me like you just were unlucky and bought poorly recorded material (unfortunately DG is not well recorded or pressed - to bad as they have some of the best performances available on many works).

While it's true that CDs do not have LP noises (pops etc.), some of the worst classical recordings I have are on CD. Problems like high noise floor, dynamic compression, and (for shame!) clipping, I've heard on some CDs (analog masters). I think that (well done) LPs are better in almost all respects than CDs. Perhaps try EMI or Phillips LPs.

If you wish to really treat yourself to some incredible sounding/well recored classical music on vinyl, check out ciscomusic.com site. These king super analog discs are amazing, the best classical lp's I own, for 32 bucks each they should be.
