There's accoustic sounds and Quality Vinyl and CDs, are there any other places for vinyl, new and/or used via phone/internet?
Just curious.

Hey Jack,
There's a place in Ardmore, PA (outside Philadelphia), that has a great selection of used vinyl and Cds. Prices on vinyl are generally $3.99 or $5.99 (then they are higher for rarer recordings). The place is called "Plastic Fantastic" on Lancaster Avenue in Ardmore, Pa. I don't think they have a catalog, but they might help you by phone if you know what you are looking for. If you ever make a trip to Philly, it's worth checking out.

I was just there yesterday and got some pristine copies of some ECM favorites: Ralph Towner, Terje Rypdal, Eberhard Weber -- and some Larry Coryell and John Coltrane. Also a mint condition Beatles "Hey Jude". I could have bought a dozen more good finds.

If you find any other good sources, let us know.

enjoy,
Jim

There are a few used places in my area, but they are definitely hit-and miss-more junk than gems. Its nice to look thru a catalog once in a while to see if they have a hidden treasure. Otherwise, it takes many hours to sift thru the LPs. Quality vinyl and CD outlet had a *sealed* copy of Moby Grape's Live Grape.

Thanks for the tip on Quality Vinyl & CD; I didn't know about that one. Just breezed through; looks like some good stuff.

I know what you mean about having a catalog. You can sit in the comfort of home, listening to tunes while browsing through the lists, circling and checking the favorites. This is a fun pasttime.

But on the other hand, one of my favorite things is to spend a good part of a morning or afternoon browsing through the racks of used vinyl. Just the feel and smell of the things has a special character to it that takes me back to my early record collecting days. You know the feel of opening one of those double albums, checking out the artwork, sliding the LP out of the sleeve, careful to catch the record just with the thumb on the outer edge and the middle finger on the center hole. I also like the album covers and recognizing the changes in style over the years. Some labels have distinctive designs or artists that tell you a lot about the recording (in these cases, you can read (or begin to read) a book by its cover). Also there's the excitement of finding that gem in the trash, like it was buried there just waiting for you. Flipping through the racks of LPs is also a lot more fun and easier on the eyes than flipping and squinting through a shelf of CDs.

Ah, the joys of the search

I agree about the hands on experience, and that the best way, if theres decent stores by you. There are only 2 used record stores by me worth mentioning. One is mostly 70s-80s rock with some jazz and blues, but no classical. His ratings are off by a - ,and his selection doesn't change that often. I go there every 2-3 months, to see what he has-and sometimes a gem usually things noone else wants-picked up a bunch of Maria Muldaur there dirt cheap.
The other is a used book/record store. Its got a lot of classical, but there is NO order to the reasonably large collection. They range from Mint, down to vomit(scratched up Lps without covers). I've only been there once, and picked up about 6 Lps, but only one was playable(it was mint) even tho they looked good. I spent a good 2 hours there, and it wasn't enough. When I go back, I'll plan on spending a whole day there, because thats what it will take, plus pateince. On the plus side, everything is $1. If you want to pick up 6-7 copies of Jane Fonda's workout record, they've got plenty.

Jack - I don't know if you saw the post above, but this place is worth mentioning again. When you get to this site, on the left side of the page there's a listing - click on "Vinyl" and you can go thru everything alphabetically or do a search for what you're looking for. There are literally thousands of selections available.
