Tonearm for HW19 Mk III

I have a Premier MMT Tonearm with a Grado Platinum cartridge mounted on a HW19 Mk. III. I am getting a hum when the tonearm aproaches the lead out grooves, but it's not too obtrusive. I would like to spend about $1500.00 to upgrade the tonearm or the tonear/cartridge. Can anyone reccomend a tonearm and/or cartridge for this table. My music preferences lean to jazz, pop/rock (well recorded) and some classical. Thanks for your help.

The hum you're getting has nothing to do with the tonearm. It is the Grado/VPI combination. Grado does not shield their cartridges and it is getting this hum from the motor. How you want to spend your money is up to you. The cartridge is a good cartridge but doesn't work as well with that table. Try a Benz Glider ($750).

I realize where the hum is coming from, but because it is not obtrusive, and I do like the overall sound of the Grado, I thought that upgrading what I perceive as a weak tonearm was the best way to spend my hard earned dough this time around. Thanks for your input, it is muc appreciated.

As far as a tonearm goes, investigate the new Wilson Benesch Act 0.5. I saw one reviewer praise it as at least as good sounding as the Graham and I believe the 0.5 retails for $1450 which is much less than the Graham. It is also very elegant looking. Apparently, it uses some of the Rega philosophy and as a matter of fact, Wilson Benesch puts the RB300 as a least expensive alternative on their tables.

I have heard the ET & ET II arms on the VPI's and thought them to be a wonderful combination. You can get them into your price range if you go used (same as for an SME V or Linn Ekos)but they are hard to find, unfortunately. The arm does seem to be the weakest part of your playback system (though not much of a weakness). If you insist on a new arm you may wish to give the Rega RB-900 some consideration (also Basis has taken this arm and done some re-engineering and made a few supposed imporvements - I would check this out as well). If you like the sound of the Grado line you ay think about getting an RB/300 arm and a Grado Reference Cartridge (or maybe jsut the reference cartidge?) Good Luck!

Thanks, Do you know if the RB900 has VTA adjustment?

I do not - I think that may be what the basis folks engineered into the other Rega models. If you call them to find out post what they tell you and educate all of us. :-)

I installed one on my Linnn LP12, but there is a company that makes
a device to adjust VTA.
