Jake: First impressions of Goldring/Rega

Well, the Goldring 1042 arrived yesterday (Tuesday) and I started listening last night. First impressions are that it's on the warm side of neutral, but certainly anything but dull. Bass is very good, extremely quick and extended, and the entire presentation is detailed without being "in your face." Rather, the soundstage is placed somewhat behind the speakers. Excellent for smooth jazz and vocals - seemed to tame the harshness and sibilance in some female vocalists. Overall, a very natural sounding presentation. Small groups are portrayed in a club-like venue, rather than a recording studio, although it does have the ability to rock when called upon to do so. I'd say a good all around performer for the money.

Some of the LPs used:
Acoustic Alchemy: "Red Dust & Spanish Lace"
Pat Matheny: Group: "Still Life (talking)"
Bob James: "Foxie"
Mel Torme: "Live At Marty's"
Dave Grusin: "Night Lines (w/Phoebe Snow)"
Diane Schuur: "Talking 'Bout You"
Patti Austin: "Every Home Should Have One"

Email me and I'll send you an update in about a week.

Daryl

I was buy your place the other day - I heard some musak and immediately felt like taking the elevator. Now I know why. I'll have to get over there to hear you new cartridge - I'll bring over the CD of Red Dust and Spanish lace to compare to the LP (I'll bring over some real music too). Cheers.

Hi Daryl,

In a thread below, Thorsten recommended a Reson Reca which he termed a "hotrodded" Goldring 1042. Did you consider this cartridge? In my current plans, a Reson Reca seems like a good way to go, which is why I ask.

Regards,

I moved!! Musta been the new tenant. Actually, I just moved up about thirty feet to Apt. A. Little more room to play with my speakers.

You have good taste in elevator music..., posted on March 10, 1999 at 14:15:04

most of your list is the "high-end" of the genre!!

Actually, Metheny's "Still Life Talking" has some great delicate percussion and an excellent transition from a reverb/delay style to pure tones that gets my attention me every time I hear it. I first saw Metheny live at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium in about 1980 and have been a fan ever since.

Maybe I'll listen to that album on my Harmon-Kardon CD Changer sound-alike system tonight.

BTW, Scott offered me a good deal on his Garrard record changer with a ceramic cartridge, even though he would probably miss it dearly. Should I take him up on it?

The HK FL8300 is a damn good sounding cd changer, I bet it would stomp with an MSB DAC! Yeah Daryl does like his music a bit too smooth for my tastes...Coltrane is as smooth as I get. I'd like to hear the cartrdige. I want a new cart, assuming I get a new job this week. I was thinking of a Sumiko Blue Point Special or Ortofon.

Yeh, that "Last Train Home" really puts me in the mood for some Zs! I thought Scott had a Thorens, at least that's what I sold him about 6 months ago. Must have transformed it into a Garrard.

Thanks Daryl. It'll be interesting to see what happens as it breaks in.

Wonder where to find the Reson? My dealer carries Rega and Music Hall,so I think I'd go with the Goldring just for the perfect setup he would do.
