Back in the '60's and '70's there was a great debate, much like the debate over vynil and CD's, -that is, their was a great contraversy over vynil vs. open reel tape. The REAL audiophiles had open reel tape and wouldn't touch vynil. I sold my open reel tape player, but I still have a pile of open reel tapes. I remember one tape I have on Murcury's "Living Presence", it was the 1812 Overture and included Beethoven's "Wellington's Victory" (you remember, the one with the big canon on the cover). It was very popular in it's time as a showoff piece.
I remember how Bonapart's army come up from the far left, then Wellington's army comes out on the far right, and the battle begins, with real muskets. You were really in the crossfire, and felt it.
I bought a copy of this great old open reel on CD. You know what? The magic and presence was completely gone. The armys were just in front of you, the feeling of being in the battle was gone, you were no longer in the crossfire. It was a staged performance, the battle was just in front of you.
If you really want to hear what CD's have done, don't compare them to vinyl, compare them to open reel tape.
Now my question is: There are a lot of open reel tape players for sale in the used equipment market. Do they still sell open reel tape recordings?
