We all know that Johnny Winter was a top blues man, but which of his records has the best combination of sound quality and great performance?

Thanks!

Looking forward to the answers you'll get.

I'm awfully partial to "Still Alive And Well" and "Saints And Sinners".

But there's so many others.

and somehow it's gone, but side four is blank and helps setting anti-skate.

In younger days it was a reference for him live with Jerry LaCroix

...but years ago I had Guitar Slinger which was on Alligator. In my humble opinion, Guitar Slinger is not only a terrific album but also had really good sonics. Stupidly gave my copy away.
The Columbia records are OK as far as sonics, that's about it.

The blissful counterstroke-a considerable new message.

My copy from high school has incredible sonics, killer bass. Of all my JW albums, the best SQ to my ears.

If you can choke down Derringer, then "Johnny Winter And..." is excellent. Nt, posted on May 14, 2022 at 07:29:48

I have several Jhonny Winter albums, posted on May 14, 2022 at 08:07:35
On Alligator Records label, I think they may have reissued some of his earlier albums too. I have quite a few artists on that Label, Charlie Musselwhite, and Lil Ed & the Blues Imperials come to mind right away.

I agree with you though, my high school era acquired LP sounds great.

Turns out I have a copy of "Alive and Well," and I'm spinning it now. Much better than I remembered it. Maybe because I'm cranking it? Thanks for the suggestion!

Great suggestions, thanks. I've always been partial to Johnny Winter's "Nothin' but the Blues" (1977), featuring Muddy Waters and James Cotton. Tremendous record and well recorded. And showing off some of Johnny's less well known acoustic work on National steel slide guitar. Any other acoustic J. Winter of note?

Have johnny winter "and" on Columbia 30331 - the studio album. Mine is second-hand but like new. How do I compare... I have only the one Winter Lp. It is amped, electric guitars with added effects - distortion, reverb. We are not talking subtlety here. I like the music, the playing, the sequencing and the sound quality. SQ compares favorably or superior to other rock albums in my collection.

I had posted here before that a favorite from the "and" Lp is "no time to live." I like nearly all the tunes, sides A and B. "Nothing Left" is another I like from the album.

I know. I was responding to the three sided LP.

My response really should have been to Story, who misremembered it as a live album.

The reissue of the first album "Johnny Winter" by Friday Music in 2012 is superb. Great liner notes by Johnny on how the songs came about. The most roots oriented blues album that he did in my opinion and by far my favorite.

I have still alive and well and saints and sinners. Out of those 2, I
like still alive and well best. Best SQ and best selection of songs.
Especially Cheap Tequila, Rock me Baby, and

Aint Nothing to Me.
