I have a rookie question, Looking to try a MC cartridge in my system. My TT is a Technics SL1300, original issue/stock tonearm unit.

Considering the AT33PTG/II (6.9g) - but is it a good match for the tonearm?

Not sure what the mass of the tonearm is? Or, is that not terribly important??

please advise

The original SL-1300 tonearm was spec'd at 23g effective mass with 6g cartridge, so 17g. The AT-33PTG/II is on the high side of medium compliance, 20-23 cu in my testing. So total mass ~25g with long mounting screws and nuts, and ~20cu compliance results in ~7Hz resonance, maybe a little lower, should be OK. Better with a lighter headshell.

The only tonearms with problems with MC cartridges are the Ultra lightweight units like SME 3009 SII improved designed to go with Shure V15s.

Your Technics deck should be fine.

What cart are you considering? You will probably also need a pair of Step up transformers (SUTs) to take the low level signal of an MC to feed into a MM input stage.

Good luck and enjoy!

thanks, this question has been bugging me for awhile.

I'm considering the AT33PTG/II (6.9g) , or similar MC cartridge ( still open to suggestions as the order is pending). Also ordered a new AT Headshell which is 10 g.

I'm still somewhat skeptical about the finer points of the mass of the tonearm and the impact on SQ. But, I'm willing to attempt a reasonable match.

My. TT (SL1300) is not high end and the tone arm is original equipment. ( I'm doubtful that it can be changed?). At any rate, I like the Technics and don't plan to change.

The phono preamp is an MP 2P. This has MC capacity, so I expect it should work well with the new cart.

thanks for your input.

Should go very well together!

Specs of the AT33PTG/II say coil impedance is 10 ohms; specs for the MP P2 say many different loadings can be set - from 27.8R to 1K.

I would suggest that the loading you prefer will be somewhere between 100 ohms and 1K ohms ... but you also have choices below 100 ohms, if you want to experiment with those. :-)

Happy experimenting - please let us know which value you decide delivers the best sound. :-))
