and I am unexpectedly working after 18 months off. Should get it dialed in by the middle of next week. First new cartridge in a few years, curious if it will bury the 103R.

playing records now. I use an accutrak printed (VE) setup template. I have to be honest it always seems like I hit it right on target on the first try. Happened that way this time anyway. Started off with Johnny Thunders- So Alone (original pressing) , followed by Eno's- Warm Jets (2nd press USA). I have never been good at reporting sound differences between carts. Particularly one with many hours on it, vs. another brand new one that was 3X the price. Perhaps the AT has more refinement and detail than the the 103R. I will say I have no complaints right out of the box. I am going to try and roughly track minutes on this , counting sides played (20 min per). Never done that before, I think I should buy a small handheld click counter.

Looks amazing ! I owned the original ART-9 and loved its 'lust for life' presentation.

I'm sure the current model builds on those fundamentals.

Cheers Johno

I too will be quite interested in your impressions. I almost bought the ART9xi, but then last Thursday I bought the Ortofon Cadenza Bronze instead.

I own the AT-ART7 and I really like it. It definitely sounds significantly better than my Denon DL-103SA. I don't play records very often anymore, but I would probably buy the AT-ART9XA if I did. I can't afford the AT-ART1000, but that's the cartridge I think might be the best on the market today.

I've discovered that the best sounding moving coils are those with the least amount of coil inductance. Unfortunately, those type of cartridges also have the lowest output voltage so you need an exceptional phono-stage to extract the best sound. I'm currently using an old Pass Labs XOno on its highest gain setting of 70-dB. It works perfectly with my AT-ART7, which has a very low rated output of 0.12-mV and coil inductance of only 8-microhenry.

The new AT-ART9XA has even lower inductance of only 2-microhenry with slightly higher rated output of 0.2-mV. I have a feeling this cartridge might be a noticeable improvement over my AT-ART7. Of course, the top-of-the-line AT-ART1000 has the lowest coil inductance of only 1-microhenry with a rated output of 0.2-mV. It's the best cartridge Audio Technica has to offer but it's a bit out of my price range at $5000.

Best regards,
John Elison

I don't know what the AT-ART9Xi sounds like, but Audio Technica's ultra low-inductance cartridges like the AT-ART7 and AT-ART9XA are some of the best sounding cartridges available regardless of price. I own the AT-ART7 and it sounds far superior to my Denon DL-103SA, which is simply a DL-103R in a special fiberglass composite epoxy body. The AT-ART7 has tighter bass, just as realistic a midrange and smoother, more detailed highs. There's really no comparison. Of course, you need an exceptional phono-stage to extract the best sound quality from ultra low-inductance moving coils.

The Denon DL-103R is an excellent cartridge for its price, but the new Audio Technica ultra low-inductance moving coils are competitive with the finest cartridges available today regardless of price.

Best regards,
John Elison

Just out of interest, what is the plastic gauge thing, on top of the headshell? never seen one of those before...

came with the arm. The arm requires a light headshell/cart combo. Although there may be a heavier counterweight available to allow heavier combos.

OOPS, can't edit the title. Should be Transimpedance

Thanks for posting John, I'm interested in what you (and others) have to say specifically about low impedance / low resistance carts. I recently got a Sutherland Little Loco Transimpedance stage which plays very nicely with the 6-ohm Ortofon Rondo Red and the 12-ohm ART-9 I have on hand (FWIW the ART-9 sounds better on this stage and also previous stages I've owned). I've been looking for a new cart and have been focusing on resistance which always seems to be in the specs, inductance not so much.
If anyone has any insight or experience with transimpedance stages and carts that mate well I'm all ears.
TIA
