Today is my birthday. I am seventy-two today. I have been lower than the mud under a snake's belly since my wife of fifty-one years and committed lover of fifty-four years passed away last month. I am going to buy myself a present.
That present is going to be a new turntable, tonearm and MC cartridge. I probably won't buy it for another week or two. What I presently have in mind is a Clearaudio Performance DC table or perhaps the Performance DC Wood table, the Satisfy carbon or perhaps the Tracer tone arm and a Clearaudio Talisman V2 Gold MC cartridge. Part of the reason for this choice is I have had good history with the dealer who sells them.
I would love to hear from any respondents who think this is a good choice or a bad choice.

I dream of an America where a chicken can cross the road without having it's motives questioned.

And sorry for your loss. We all need the healing nature of music at these times. I really like your idea of buying the new turntable to better connect with it. Can't actually answer the question, but I admire you for the path that you are on.

Lets hope it lifts your spirits. I can't bear to think how I would feel if i lost my wife.
Enjoy the music, your choice sounds good especially coming from a trusted source. Enjoy even more the music you loved together.

and we wish solace for you.

You probably need a good project to tackle but keep in mind that since shipping has not only gone way up in price, they also beat the crap out of packages now. Local is best if any issue arises. Setup is important

Take your time. Use the time to do research. It will be useful but also a great distraction from your loss. What music did she enjoy? What's your current system? Make this a quest like Don Quixote for his Dulcinea. I'm sorry for your loss. Celebrate her and your relationship!

I really appreciate the responses. I feel I will get through this. I just don't when. Some people might me a terrible materialist to use this occasion to buy a new phono kit. I knew the respondents of the vinyl asylum would understand.

I was like, you're crazy, just get a better DAC.

It was a good choice, but one needs a good DAC, too.

So very sorry for your loss, Don... I am 72 until October, and lost my wife of 33 years 11 years ago. I bought a Nottingham Analogue Space 294, 12" Anna arm and a Grado Ref 2 Platinum cart, sounds very good.
I also bought my Tannoy Canterbury SE speakers... Music helps.

May you enjoy years of comforting memories!

and many condolences to you. Thats a long time to be together and is a blessing just by that. So few of us ever get 51 years with a partner and what a wonderful thing to share that story with us so we know. I'm so very sorry for your terrible loss.

Returning to the things that bring us joy after loss isn't a shameful act. Too much judgement in the world makes us question our own purest motives. You have no reason not to pursue whatever will bring you gleeful moments again and if it is Clearaudio, so be it. If it was me, I would go SME 30.

I'm so sorry. No one could replace my wife of 35 years and hope to make it 20 more and pray she outlives me. It's good to see that you're looking for a new adventure.

What do you desire?

Get it.

So sorry to hear about your wife, I am sure that was devastating.

Good luck with your new vinyl rig. I hope it brings you years of enjoyment and helps ease your pain.

So sorry for your loss. It seems your closeness is the best measurement of lives well lived together.

I hope you can take some measure of solace from listening to music and perhaps also some music you both enjoyed.

I read this the day you posted but haven't been able to write until now. That fact that over 400 have read it without yet replying has me thinking I'm not alone.

My Dad had to live the last fifteen years on his life without my mom who he adored, and it's my biggest fear in life to follow in his footsteps.

Your post shows how no matter how well we conduct ourselves, life can hit you in the face with a Louisville slugger at any time.

I too feel your pain and send you my greatest sympathy.

Two years ago, I was almost where you are now. My wife of 33 years had a devastating stroke. She was paralyzed, unable to speak or even swallow. For a week, doctors told me they did not expect her to survive. I walked around in a daze, wondering what I would do without her.

After about 5 days, I finally sat in my music room and dropped the needle on my saddest classics...Grateful Dead's Black Peter, and Neil Young's Harvest are the ones I remember. It helped.

After a week, she came out of her coma and made a miraculous recovery.

I heartily endorse your decision to upgrade your system. You'll probably find a lot of old songs have new meaning. I can only hope they'll soothe your heart.

Hi Don
Thanks for sharing a beautiful tribute to your life partner. Please accept my condolences.
I think you have a great plan- a few years ago, I took a chance on a pre-owned Marantz TT-15s1 turntable (made by Clearaudio, and uses a Satisfy arm). I do not regret this decision, and still prefer this tt to my direct drive kenwood kd-5070 and Yamaha yp-d71.
Clearaudio make excellent products, especially at their price points.
I have previously used a Clearaudio Concept MC cart with the Marantz, but found I enjoy an Audio Technica At-vm740ml even more.
I think it is important that you have a local dealer that you can trust with this.

I finally pulled the trigger. I drove down to HiFi Buys in Atlanta yesterday and bought a Clearaudio Performance DC Wood turntable with the Tracer tone arm and an Ortofon Cadenza Bronze cartridge. Naturally I will have to wait several several weeks to actually get it, but that just gives me something to look forward to. I still miss and mourn my wife nearly constantly, but life must go on.
