This two record set from In-and-Out Records in Germany came as quite a surprise. I had never heard of Kuhn but he's been around for quite a while, actually since the Second World War. I first found out about him from Michael Ludwig on YouTube ( 45RPM channel). Kuhn is obviously more popular on the continent. He plays piano and sings popular standards. This is not hard bop, Blue Note jazz but wonderfully satisfying renditions of well known songs.

In 2013 Kuhn came to the US to make this album in LA. Accompanying him are John Clayton and Jeff Hamilton, the sidemen for Diane Krall. Al Schmitt did the engineering and, not surprisingly, the sonics are stunning. Kuhn sings on several of the numbers and it amazes how American he sounds. Not the trace of an accent.

Kuhn died a couple of years after recording this. I think he was 85.

Both discs were well-pressed and quiet though both were slightly warped but playable. I doubt this was a pressing fault as several of my last orders from different sources, including the usually dependable RTI were also warped. I have to believe it's the weather. I live in Oregon and the temperatures have been crazy.

All in all, this is a terrific set for those who like straight ahead jazz. I ordered it directly from In and Out Music in Germany though there might be other sources nearer.
