The Saxophone was invented by Belgian instrument maker Adolph Sax in the early 1840s. It initially provoked interest with Classical musicians but that interest waned. It gained popularity in the twentieth century in America, particularly with Jazz musicians. Here's a few selections from my collection with album cover art and the music featuring the saxophone.

A bunch of great albums in there. I've never seen that Frank Strozier LP. Love his playing. Enjoy! nt, posted on May 9, 2021 at 14:29:25

Great tour. Jealous as usual. So many records and so little time. nt, posted on May 9, 2021 at 15:32:16

Odd, I never heard of Buddy Savitt.

Art pepper used to have a little cafe joint in a strip mall down by the Redondo Beach harbor. A very casual place, part of the business strategy was to open early to sell breakfast to the fishermen on their way to the boats, and then there would be jazz in the evenings . It didn't last long, but it was a strange mix for awhile. People interested in day drinking cheap beer as the attraction sitting up at the bar, people interested in listening to jazz at the tables , , and neither group of customers interested, even slightly, in what the other was doing.

Anyway, a group of us were there on a Saturday afternoon, listening to supersax and drinking beer.

The band took the usual break and scattered quickly. Break was over, and the bass player hadn't returned. This was very unusual behavior, I have seen players so drunk that they had to fight their way through tables and chairs, pushing them out of the way as the tried to both stand upright, and use the furniture as aids to propulsion as they struggled forward to make the stage , but they got there.

Still no bass, band is standing around waiting, looking at supersax. he doesn't know what to do, and is about to start without a bass player when the guy appears at the doorway, and then quickly makes the stage. Everyone in the place is curious, and a few asked what happened. The small audience fell quiet, wanting to hear the answer.

Before the bass player could think of a credible answer, his girlfriend spoke out in a loud complaint, , " My ass hurts". With that the band licked off, and the bass player started slapping his bass, wearing a big smile.

One of the reasons that jazz records can only be an illusion of the actual event .
